A member asked:

How can you tell whether new born baby's breathing is fast or slow?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Breathing: The typical newborn will take approximately 40 breaths per minute. However, their breathing rates do vary. They can slow down and, at times, speed up. This phenomenon is known as "periodic breathing" and is normal. With that in mind, the baby's comfort level is the most important indicator. A comfortable is just fine. The laboring child, regardless of respiratory rate, must be seen by a doc immed.
