Avoid painful shoes: If your toes are not squeezed into shoes with pointed toes you are unlikely to develop bunions. If you wear shoes that cause you no foot pain you will have few long term foot problems.

Avoid bad shoes: The most important controllable factor is to avoid shoes with high heels and pointed toes. Obviously the genetic propensity toward this is beyond your control.

Can only slow down: There is no way to completely prevent bunions from developing. They are secondary to foot structure and function. The deformity gradually progresses over time due to wear and tear. The best you can do is slow down the progression. Good shoes and supports that will improve foot function are the best treatment. Custom orthotics are an additional option. Discuss with your foot care specialists. Dr l.

Slow the progression: Some options include the use of bunion toe spacers, bunion shields, and orthoces. Make sure that your shoes are wide enough for your foot type.
