Firm mattress: There is no good medical literature to make a recommendation. Generally a firm mattress at the right height to allow for logrolling in and out of bed is ideal. Ask about trial periods and return policies to avoid disappointment with a purchase.

Varies: Despite popular commercials, the selection of a comfortable mattress is somewhat arbitrary. It is one of the few products consumer reports wont rate cause there is not much objectivity to it. Usually a matress should be form enough to provide support, but also soft enough to match you contour and allow your spine to be in a neutral position. Thank you for the question.
