Many possibilities: I'd recommend you see a podiatrist. You could have a neuroma, a plantar plate tear, capsulitis, bursitis, a stree fracture.....Just too many possibilites without a proper exam.

Weight shift: When you a have a bunion, depending on its severity, your weight can shift from the area beneath the bunion to the other bones in the ball of the foot. X-rays would show the length differences between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals. If the 2nd metatarsal is significantly longer than the 1st, it would bear more weight resulting in more pain in that area.

Several causes: The pain in the ball of your foot could be metatarsalgia, inflammation of the joints at the ball of your feet, a ligament tear (plantar plate ligament tear), capsulitis, stress fracture, etc. Hope this helps.
