Gingivitis: After braces are removed, it is usually easier to clean the teeth and the gum tissue responds by shrinking back to normal tissue tone. This should take 10 days to 2 weeks with consistent care.

Temporary/permanent?: Gums should not swell during Orthodontic treatment if Oral Hygiene procedures were properly accomplished. Cleaning between teeth daily (floss, WaterPik, rubber tip, small pointed brush, etc) mandatory to prevent gum damage. If you are lucky swelling will begin to abate immediately. If not, surgical reconstruction may be required. Ask your Orthodontic Specialist for advice.

No more than a week!: It is normal to have some mild gum swelling after braces come off. Make an appointment right away for an exam and cleaning. In the meantime, rinsing with warm salt water (1 tsp salt per 8 oz. water) after every meal will help get your gums back in shape. The bacteria that have been trapped beneath the gums and archwires cause the swelling. Once it is gone, your gums should feel much better.

Usually 1-2 weeks: Most of the swelling should go back to normal within 1-2 weeks. Sometimes, however, there can be calculus (tarter) buildup or leftover orthodontic cement present that will keep the gums swollen. I recommend that patients schedule an appointment for an exam, cleaning and x-rays about 2 weeks after their braces come off to make sure everything is in good shape.
