Not weird: You have a break in your intestinal or rectal mucosa. Some amount of blood is mixing with some amount of stool. Depending on the quantities of either/both, and the source of bleeding, you'll test positive sometimes and negative other times. That's the reason most doctors ask for at least 3 samples.

Blood in stool.: Heme occult test is not 100% sensitive or specific. You do have false negative and false positive with this test. If you have heme occult test positive, given your age, need to at least have a flexible sigmoidoscopy, if not a colonoscopy.
