No test is perfect: No test is perfect, but GI bleeding can be intermittent. Bleeding from the GI tract can originate from mouth, esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, anus. Blood can also be ingested from sources like the nose, throat, lungs. Vaginal bleeding can contaminate stool. Symptoms often direct testing & empiric treatment. When a source of bleeding is elusive, bleeding scans may help localize the source.
