Abscess: This sounds as if it needs to be surgically drained. Antibiotics may control the inflammation surrounding the abscess cavity but may not get into the abscess, or once in may be inactivated by proteins, acidity or anaerobiasis within the cavity. See a dentist or oral surgeon asap and get this dealt with before it creates more problems. Good luck and feel better soon.

Get the root canal: Have you started the root canal on this tooth? That should tremendously relieve the tooth pain. If the root canal is started and the pain relief is not there, i would call the dentist. It sounds like the antibiotic is not effective for the bacteria associated with the abscessed tooth. Often Amoxicillin is the antibiotic use for oral infections. You may need to add Flagyl or switch to clindamycin.

Need more info: Are you being treated for that tooth by a dentist? General dentist or an endodontist? If so, let your dentist know immediately & he\she will know how best to remedy the problem. If you are taking antibiotics on your own, it will be a waste of time as merely taking antibiotics will not resolve the issue. Period! root canal therapy, proper drainage & adequate antibiotics are needed, or extraction?
