Omeprazole: Omeprazole can be taken long term fairly safely. There have been reports of bone loss with extended use of proton pump inhibitors, more concerning in women, of course. Also, use of ppi (proton pump inhibitors) long term may lead to so called atrophic gastritis (thinning of the stomach mucosal lining), which some believe is a precursor of stomach cancer, but ppis have not been shown to cause it.

Ppi's safe in short : Recent studies are showing some concerns about long term ppi use. They tend to inhibit calcium and magnesium absorption. They may increase risk of certain GI tract infections and some studies are worrisome for cardiac risks. Current recommendation is not to stay on them for over a yr. May try zantac (ranitidine) or Pepcid and take Omeprazole only for severe gerd. Ask your doctor about alternatives and options.
