Upper abdomen/epigastric pain nearly every morning on waking, recurring for yrs, bad this wk, tender when touching, can palpate to produce pain. tends to decrease as day goes on. hiatal hernia dx some years back, can this be culprit?

For such long acting symptoms I assume you've been evaluated & gastroscoped by a gastroenterologist. Peptic ulceration of the stomach or duodenum are usually more symptomatic when the stomach is empty and better with eating. If you haven't had a gastroscopy or even a consultation with a gastroenterologist, I strongly recommend these. If you have a gastroenterologist, consult him again for testing
