Several issues: Many things can cause sore ankles including but not limited to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, edema, sprains and strains, gout, nerve impingement, lymes disease, phlebitis, etc., etc. Seek medical attention and get an evaluation as there could be something very treatable in your case.
