Leukemia is a....: Possibility, but less likely than an inflammatory/infectious process. Among leukemias, an increased number of circulating "mature" granulocytes is a characteristic of cml. Acute leukemias more often have low pmns due to the infiltration of the marrow and differentiation blockade. Pmns are the first wave of response to bacterial infection, tissue damage, etc. These are far more common than leukemia.

Yes, but: Many things can cause a high pmn count including infections, medications, and autoimmune disorders. CML or other types of myeloproliferative neoplasms are the most common primary bone marrow cause of elevated pmn count. This is considered a chronic type of leukemia which has a better prognosis than acute leukemia. In acute leukemia, blast cells are the cause of elevated white count.
