Home remedies for OM: Most home remedies for otitis media aim to soothe or reduce the pain of the infection. You apply warm salt, oil or the oil from a spice into the ear canal. Caution must be exercised, not to apply hot substances on or in the ear, so as not to burn the ear canal or eardrum. I am an advocate for the judicious and appropriate use of antibiotics to effectively treat the infection of otitis media.

Some might: Many episodes of OM are viral and self heal with no intervention. Some bacterial ear infections would self heal over months like before antibiotics. Some are triggered by aggressive bacteria and can lead to perforated ear drums, chronic infection, mastoiditis, and long term health implications. The danger of any self treatment is delay of proper diagnosis,treatment & potential for complications.
