Dry sockets: Dry sockets happen when a scab doesn't form over the wound exposing raw nerve endings. You should be able to eat soft foods without damage, but nothing like a bagel or chewing gum. Treat it like any other bony surgery. If this was a hip replacement, you wouldn't start getting ready for a marathon. Be careful and use good judgement and you should be fine.

Some Restraint: You can definitely start eating more normally, but it depends on exactly what was done with your surgery. The best person to ask is the doctor that did the procedure, as they will be most versed in your particulars.
