Go see your dentist: Tell your dentist/orthodontist (one who gave you braces) about your concerns and ask her/him your questions. In fact, it's always best to ask as many questions as possible prior to starting medication or undergoing any surgery/procedure.

Wax: If you received some wax from your dentist/orthodontist, place it on the cleat. Whoever placed the braces may need to bend the cleat so it doesn't hurt until your tongue gets used to it. Things will heal up normally.

Wax: Use some soft wax to cover the sharp cleats on the band, then get the orthodontist to adjust the band. You can get the wax at the pharmacy or through the orthodontist. It will protect the tongue. You can take tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil for the pain and inflammation. Common problem, not serious.

See Orthodontist: See your qualified orthodontic specialist (i hope you're seeing a specialist). He can tuck in the cleat in seconds. Until then, treat this non-serious (except for the discomfort you are having) problem w 1 200mg advil (ibuprofen) every 4hrs, rinse3x/day w 1tsp salt in8 oz warm water, put the wax your orthodontist gave you onto the cleat, and dab orabase-b onto sore spot w q-tip.
