A member asked:

Just got my braces, and the medial aspect of the molar bands constantly scratches my tongue, is this normal?

Scratches: No this is not normal and you must see your dentist as soon as possible. Things like this don't happen often but sometimes they do and your problem will be solved.

It happens: Call your orthodontist for an appointment... the edge of that band can be smoothed down and your problem will be solved.

Unfortunately yes: Will take time for tongue to get used to bands. To get is most tactile organ in your body, so the new edges feel like mountains. Take Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin (not Tylenol) EXACTLY as directed on label. Rinse 3x/day w 1tsp salt in 8oz warm water. Dab Orabase-B onto sore spots w Q-tip. Follow any 1st aid directions from your Orthodontic Specialist to the letter. Give it a few days.
