See the podiatrist: To be on the safe side, have a podiatrist check your toe. Depending on how you smashed your toe, it may be superficial like a blood blister under the nail (subungual hematoma) or a more severe situation with a fractured bone. This could be enclosed or an open fracture in which the bone is exposed in the nail bed. It's not normal. Get checked to be safe!
