Gum bleeding: Most often bleeding after brushing is caused by inadequate stimulation of the gums from regular brushing. Regular brushing toughens the tissue. Without regular brushing, they become soft and bleed easily. Vitamin deficiency, particularly vitamin c, could also contribute to bleeding gums. Conditions that cause gum overgrowth (hypertrophy), eg. Medications like dilantin, could also be a factor.

See a Dentist !: Bleeding gums can be a sign of gingivitis and bacterial growth. Rarely, it could be a symptom of a coagulation defect. In either case, dentists can screen for these conditions.

See your dentist: It sounds like you have gum disease. I suggest you see your dentist for a professional cleaning and evaluation of your gums.

Not good: Bleeding is a sign that things are going south, rapidly. Gums probably infected. See your dentist asap. He/she may want you to see a periodontist, a gum specialist.
