Protect your kidneys: Kidney doesn't "grow back", so once kidney damage occurs, there's not much one can do to recover function. What can be done is protect the remaining kidney and prevent further damage. This is best accomplished by rigorous blood sugar control, blood pressure control, avoidance of smoking, low fat/low salt diet, and proper hydration. Also, see your doctor regularly to monitor function.

US and renal disease: You cannot tell the grade of chronic kidney disease from an ultrasound (us) report. Have a 24 hour urine collection for creatinine clearance (cc) to get an actual glomerular filtration rate. Us's are interpreted by radiologists and their interpretations are subjective. A cc give an objective assessment of one's renal function. See a nephrologist to get a better idea of your kidneys' function.
