Blood counts.: Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Patients with leukemia always have an abnormality of some kind in their blood counts. The cells may be too low or too high. There are many other causes of abnormal blood counts - not just leukemia. However, if there is an abnormality in the blood counts, a pathologist may be asked to look for leukemia cells in the blood under the microscope.
