A member asked:

When i urinate is it normal to smell like ammonia? does this come alone with diverticulitis and cramping in my back where my kidneys are?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ammoniacal Urine: There are some bacteria that can infect the urine that create a higher ph level. This occurs when urea is turned into ammonia by an enzyme called urease. If you have had xrays that do not show stones and urine cultures that are negative, then you may have a high ph. However, the greater concern is that you may have infection with a urea-splitting bug, which can result in big stones. See md.
