Years: While gerd doesn't necessarily cause cancer per se, it can cause the cells in the esophagus to change to intestine type cells, which in the minority of cases can turn in to cancer over the course of years. If your gerd is bothersome, and present for more than a few years, consider seeing a gastroenterologist for a consultation.
