Complex: Neglectful or abusive parenting in the early years, early trauma (especially recurring trauma), and some genetic vulnerability is likely in the mix too. As another doctor noted, it is a a complex question. The important issue is that it is treatable, and several forms of psychotherapy have been proven effective for treatment of borderline personality disorder.
