Difficult childhoods: Imho, children who are confronted with very stressful relationships in early childhood fail to learn healthy boundaries (borders). They may alternate being rejected and being overwhelmed by inappropriate intimacy with a parent. Things are understood in extremes - awful or wonderful. This is confusing and creates insecurity. Hot/cold, on/off, lover/enemy. A middle, shade of grey is scary/boring.
