Very lengthy topic.: Causes: partially genetic, abuse, neglect, family hx of severe psych disorders or parents with severe personality disorders. It is a personality disorder in which the person feels stably unstable, is predictably unpredictable, where people around the person feel like they are walking on eggshells and their significant others feel like they can never get too close or be too far away. See wikipedia.

Complex: Neglectful or abusive parenting in the early years, early trauma (especially recurring trauma), and some genetic vulnerability is likely in the mix too. As another doctor noted, it is a a complex question. The important issue is that it is treatable, and several forms of psychotherapy have been proven effective for treatment of borderline personality disorder.
