Depression: No tests to diagnose depression. It is a clinical diagnosis means by seeing the patient asking question and mental status exam done by a doc.

Some say yes: The monoamine hypothesis of depression posits the synaptic metabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters as one of the principal determinants of mood. It seems to be a useful heuristic although undoubtedly there are additional impinging variables. A gain of function mutation in monoamine oxidase may lead to excessive catabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters for retention of stable mood. Stay safe!
