can clinical depression show up on a brain mri?

Not likely: Traditional MRI cannot diagnosis depression, nor other "functional" problems, such as dementia, etc. Imaging such as MRI can only assess anatomy. There are functional MRI scanners which are in use, typical in research, frequently in dementia. Most applications of fmri are still experimental.

Yes: All medications have some risks but there are several antidepressants that are safe during breastfeeding. There can be some feeding difficulties and the mediations do generally go into the breast milk. Wellbutrin, (bupropion) prozac, zoloft and Celexa are the names of some the medications that can be used.
A member asked:

If I am still not over the baby blues after two months, does that mean I have postpartum depression?

Dr. Holly Maes
Pediatrics 36 years experience
No: Not neccesarily, but not something you should ignore either. Post-partum depression does take into account how long symptoms are present, but also how severe and life-altering these symptoms are. There are lots of screening tests you can use online, and if these are positive, you need to talk to your own doctor or pediatrician for futher evaluation and help. This is very treatable - ask for help!

How can I prevent depression in pregnancy?

Dr. Scott Kramer
Gynecology 36 years experience
Me time important: Pregnancy and child raising are very demanding times in a women's life. Balance is always important but often gets discounted by women to their own detriment. Take some time to nurture you: for example regular exercise, rest, meditation or yoga. If you don't take care of yourself you won't be at your best to take care of those you care about most.

A 23-year-old male asked:

Can long term use of sint john's worth/for depression/ cause liver inflammation in some way?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Haven't heard of it: Haven't heard of st. John's wort causing liver inflammation. The wort does increase activity of some liver enzymes, thus leading to faster breakdown of other medications (the enzymes in the liver break down the other medications more rapidly, if the person is taking st. John's wort). So, medicines like xanax, (alprazolam) elavil, oral contraceptives, statins for cholesterol, etc... May become less potent.

11-42%: This is very common, with as many as 42% of moms experiencing ppd. The risk is higher if there is a personal or family history of ppd, depression, or anxiety.
