Somatostatin: Patients with carcinoid syndrome from a tumor are at an increased risk of having carcinoid crisis during induction of anesthesia or manipulation of the tumor intraoperatively. Preoperative treatment with a somatostatin analog (e.g. Octreotide) should decrease this risk. This medication should also be readily available during surgery.

Yes it can be: But we have good medication (sandostatin (octreotide)) which can block the chemicals that cause the problems, so most patients can have surgery done quite safely. A shot of sandostatin (octreotide) is all it takes to prevent the problem/symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome, something which was not available until about 10 years back.
