What are the advantages and disadvantages of different treatments for broken forearm?

Cast or surgery: There's basically 2 treatments: cast or surgery. If the bones are not out of place, a cast should do just fine. There is very very little risk with a cast. Stiffness may be the main risk. Surgery is typically needed if the bones are not alignment. If the bones are not aligned, the patient will have trouble with twisting motion. The bones can have a hard time healing, also, if they are apart.

Depends on fracture: Forearm fractures that are not displaced can typically be treated in a cast for 6-8 weeks. Fractures in childreen where there is displacement can be reduced and still treated in a cast. Forearm fractures in adults with displacement typically require surgical fixation with plates and screws to align the bone and get the best results.
