What's dilated: The kidneys connect to the bladder by the ureters. If just the kidney collecting system is dilated it is hydronephrosis. If the ureters are dilated also, it is hydroureteronephrosis. It gives us an idea where the blockage is.

Anatomics: One involves the kidney and its collecting system and the other includes the ureters.

Somewhat technical: Hn applies to the kidney per se where hun implies distinction of the kidney and ureter ( the tube carrying urine from kidney to bladder). Often they mean the same thing, unless the point of obstruction is before the ureter begins, eg, the ureteropelvic junction.

???? your question: Hydronephrosis is back pressure on the kidney due to obstruction. This can have many causes. A stone, a stricture, a tumor, uric acid, infection, and many other things can cause hydronephrosis. If you have this, work with your pcp, urologist, interventional radiologist and others to appropriately treat this condition. You need to save all the kidney function you can.

Retained urine: Results in kidney swelling, most commonly due to obstruction between the kidney pelvis (urine funnel) and ureter which drains urine into bladder (uretero-pelvis junction obstruction), less commonly due to obstruction at bladder end of ureter or bladder reflux, in both cases ureter will will also be swollen. Unilateral means that hydronephrosis is only present on one side.

Depends on the cause: Hydronephrosis is a symptom (fluid in the kidney and or ureter) not a disease. Treatment depends on discovering its underlying cause. Potential causes include: obstruction from stones, clots, or tumors, infection, reflux, excess fluid ingestion or excretion, among many others. See your urologist.
