A 36-year-old female asked:

I've had severe pain and swelling in my hands, especially in my left thumb. i get a burning sensation in my wrists while touching. it affects my work and makes me irritable. what should i do?

PCP: This particular problem is not going to be able to be answered on this site. My recommendation would be to see her pcp and she will probably need lab work and x-ray and examination to make an accurate diagnosis. This could be anywhere between carpal tunnel syndrome and osteoarthritis.

Thumb Pain: Tough to say based on that description. One possibility would be osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb/wrist, though not typically described as burning. There are other possibilities and best to have a consult with a hand doctor for a good exam. Best of luck.
