Arthritis of thumb?: Can't be for sure what you have, but possibly some arthritis at the base of the thumb, especially if you use your hand/thumb a lot etc... If symptom has been ongoing and worsening for awhile, this is likely. If symptom comes on rather fast over couple of days, it could be gout--this can be very painful. Motrin/aleve may help. Consult doc asap. Good luck and happy new year.
