A member asked:

Does prescription strength acid reflux medication take away calcium from your body?some patients are stating that their teeth become brittle, i'm worry

No: Teeth are formed early in life and even before birth so no effect from calcium loss. Teeth become brittle from plaque or acids not being removed on a daily basis. This acid could be from the acid reflux itself not the meds.

Not usually: Teeth are much more likely to be damaged from the long term effects of acid reflux than from the medication. However, one of the common side effects is dry mouth, which can contribute to tooth decay and gum problems. I would recommend using biotene mouthwash and toothpaste to improve the dry mouth situation and perhaps a Fluoride gel in a custom tray at night for maximum protection against decay.
