A member asked:

Can prescription strength acid reflux medication damage teeth? i have heard the medication does not let you absorb calcium and magnesium.

Acid reflux: Acid reflux will damage your teeth. Te acids will erode your teeth. It is not the medication that is the problem so keep taking it. Talk to your dentist about strategies that will help strengthen your teeth.

No: Once the teeth are formed, reduction of absorption of calcium and magnesium have no bearing on the hardness of teeth. Demineralization can occur through acid exposure and bacterial byproducts which do damage the teeth, and calcium and phosphate in the saliva aid in remineralizing these areas. So your ability to remineralize your teeth may be compromised, but to what extent I do not know.
