Geriatric Depression: Management of geriatric depression presents specific challenges which can make recovery slow. The dosage of medications must be started low and increased slowly. Often, additional medical issues complicate the picture, as well. Please ensure a pharmacogenomic test (swab of mouth) has been done to facilitate effective personalized medicine choice, e.g.Genesight is covered by medicare.

Check the "cure": A couple things come to mind. First, multiple health problems and their treatment. It's not uncommon to find that meds contribute to depression (e.g., pain meds), and may block an anti-depressant. Have his doctors or pharmacist review that. Second, loss is a constant reality at that time of life. Loss of family, friends, independence, health, etc. Does he have someone he will talk to about this?

Much To Assess: It's hard 2imagine addressing ur question in a meaningful way w/out knowing much more about ur father. There could be any number of physical, psychological, social & cultural factors at play. From psychological & social perspectives, in later yrs, we generally face more losses -ppl, work, independence, etc. We often face loneliness &/or not feeling needed or finding meaning in our lives.
