Preparing for ops: General anesthesia is amazingly safe - safer than walking on the street! modern drugs and extensive continuous monitoring of the patient make surgery a safe, even pleasant experience. Please talk to your friendly anesthesiologist before scheduling a case with your surgeon; you will be pleasantly surprised and well informed!

Discuss with doctor: The best advice is probably to discuss your concerns in detail with your anesthesiologist. The vast majority of anesthetics are extremely safe and have no significant adverse reactions. There are a variety of mechanisms which have been described as having some value reducing anxiety including relaxation tapes and meditation.
