Many: Human ingenuity will create protective mechanisms in order to minimize the effects of such disasters should they recur. If you are referring to the manner in which individuals deal with personal tragedy that is a topic for a textbook.

Depends: on what you are asking! In "general" when people are in natural disasters they are in shock. There is fear/anxiety, and grief. There are many ways people cope in response to disasters, and I would suggest going to FEMA.org for more info. People who have a disaster plan in advance will do better coping than those that do not, so like they say in the Boy Scouts, "Be prepared!"

Unfortunately, the: most common coping mechanism is denial, i.e. failure to recognize the the severity/likelihood of the event. Once it's accepted, most people concentrate on supplies needed to cope with loss of power, communications and food. Having a concrete plan for sheltering in place, going to a public shelter or evacuating can be reassuring. Having emergency supplies already on hand can also be reassuring.
