Tests needed: Sciatica is diagnosed on clinical grounds based on your pain complaints(typically low back pain and shooting, burning pain into one or both legs). This is usually confirmed with an MRI of your spine, which may show disc herniation or spinal stenosis. If the venous doppler on your leg was negative, the chances of a deep venous thrombosis are less likely.

Generally you can't: Unless you have a fever or swollen limb which may suggest a clot more than sciatica otherwise not very specific. I would suggest ruling out the clot first and then workup the sciatica issue afterwards.
