A member asked:

When mesh is used in hernia repair is it dipped in some solution that encourages quick collagen&fibrous growth & which reduces chances of rejection?

Some surgeons: Place mesh in antibiotic solution before implantation, but I am not aware of any solution that encourages collagen or fibrous growth. Mesh material is inert and there is almost zero chance of rejection, just small chance of infection. Good questions!

No, not dipped.: I don't dip mesh in any solution that encourages collagen or fibrous growth; the mesh itself encourages that reaction. Some surgeons dip the mesh in an antibiotic solution to try to decrease postoperative infection, however, studies are continuing on this. By the way the mesh is never "rejected" by the body, but there can be some reaction to it, especially if there had been an infection.
