Dermatology: Hopefully the doctor who performed the shave biopsy is an expert on melanoma. Only someone with this background and experience can make the clinical decision on what further procedures may be necessary in a given case, but my rule of thumb is to always err on the side of safety. Dysplastic nevi: Generally i don't do shave biopsies of suspected dysplastic nevi. However if a deep saucerization was done it might be all out. It depends if the doctor thinks that the lesion was removed or not. If just the top of the lesion was removed, it should be re excised.
