TMJ treatment: Hot warm compresses, avoid chewing hard foods & gum, & taking some nsaids such as advil, Motrin or aleve (naproxen) may help you on your own. Some dentists advise physical therapy or seeing a chiropractor. However, regardless of whether or not it goes away on your own, i would suggest seeing a dentist who is experienced & trained to treat patients with tmd for an evaluation. A night guard is also suggested.

Several options...: Nsaid's are a starting point to reduce joint inflammation and pain. Splint therapy for occlusal problems, followed by equilibration (polishing teeth to fit better). Equilibration only if the problems are minor and easy to diagnose. Orthodontics is used in cases where the bite is off too much to equilibrate. Muscle relaxers are used by some. Tens units are used to relax muscles as well.
