No TMJ specialty: There is no specialty for TMJ therapy. Most dentists have had some training in treating basic TMJ problems. However, with more advanced cases, many choose to refer to oral surgeons known for treating TMJ issues. The best resource may be your dentist, and if they can't help they should know where to send you.

Great question!: A dentist versed in occlusion or bite issues is best. Check credentials! how long in practice? Success rate ( speak to other patients). Is his/hers training a weekend course suggesting a dabbling approach or has the dentist spent considerable time in learning how to treat the TMJ patient? My training background involves 100's of hours which most of us consider to be the bench-mark. Good luck.

Dawson Acad trained: I strongly feel that dentists trained by the acclaimed dawson academy for advanced dental study are the most adept at treating TMJ disorders... They can properly diagnose and treat literally any level of TMJ disorder...They are known as "complete dentists" because they analyze all areas of breakdown, and treat and/or refer properly...

Treating TMD: Unfortunately, i find that there are not many dentists who truly know how to properly diagnose & treat patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It requires advanced training & a lot of personal clinical experience. There is no specialty in 'tmj'. Each area of the country has some dentists who are known for & well respected in this area. You have to do some investigation & research it.
