TMJ: A big number of the population have some type of TMJ condition but if it is debilitating, a doctor can help you. Some conditions cause headaches and an over the counter medication, e.g. Acetaminophen can only alleviate symptoms. If the cause won't be addressed, relief can only be palliative.

Palliative care: If you are in pain and and have popping/clicking sounds in your joint(s), and have limited opening and range of motion in your jaw then you may want to see a dentist as soon as you can. In the meantime take an NSAID medication like Ibuprofen 600 to 800 mg every 6 hours. Alternate between a heating pad and ice pack 10 mins cold and 20 mins heat on the joint(s). Eat a soft to liquid diet also.

TMJ Pain: You would be best to see a dentist that treats tmd problems, most dentist have limited training in treating TMJ problems. Joints need to be evaluated to see the positioning and or break down of the joint, is it degenerative arthritis, bad bite, muscle spasm. Typical treatment for my patients consist of a lower repositioning appliance which decompresses the joint and relieves nerve impingement.

Some self care: Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. Avoid excessive gum chewing. Avoid clenching or grinding teeth. Avoid destructive habits like "popping" your jaw, cracking nuts with your teeth, etc.
