Many styles: There are many meditation styles, with differing directions for each. In the one I use (mindfulness, also known as "insight" or vipassana), the main idea is awareness of whatever is present. Each time you notice your mind has strayed from the chosen focus (breath, sound, body sensations, etc) you simply bring it back. This is doing it "correctly." there is no "perfect, " only practice & process.
