Core strengthening: The more stable your spine is (by strong and balanced abdominal and low back muscles) along with flexible leg muscles the better chances you have of having normal, healthy discs. Avoid heavy lifting--particularly with poor biomechanics, repetitive bending (flexion) movements which will predispose to protrusion and herniations.
