Talk to your doctor: Disk herniations within the low back can often be treated conservatively. The decision to treat conservatively or with surgery depends on various factors and the specific type and location of the disk herniation. Your doctor can explain these details to you and advise whether conservative management or surgery is the best option.

Surgery unlikely : Most lumbar disc problems (90%) will heal with time and physical therapy (core work, stretching, etc). If it does not heal within 2-3 months surgery is an option although outcomes between surgical patients and non-surgical patients are similar.
