IUD: It is important to know if your iud is copper (paraguard) or hormone-infused (mirena). The paraguard is rated for 10 years with research saying even 11 years is fine before replacement. Mirena (levonorgestrel) iuds will lose hormonal potency at 5 years. Leaving them in at this point probably hasn't caused damage per se, but in the case of mirena, (levonorgestrel) you are certainly not as protected with respect to contraception.
