IUD ?'s: The current IUD's (like Mirena) may cause cramping initially, especially in women who have not had children, but are generally safe. Older types of IUD's with braided "wicks" (like the Dalkon shield) were discontinued b/c of infections causes by migration of bacteria via the "wick effect". At 21, ask your gyn about a low dose oral contraceptive, which affords protection if taken punctually.
