Is it okay to inject a chlorine in a root canal?

Hypochlorite: Hypochlorite is widely used as a disinfectant inside the pulpal canal by dentists. It is a potent chewer of dead tissues and certain bacteria. The good news is that dentists wick all the liquid back out of your tooth and may use different disinfectants in addition or to replace the hypochlorite. Best to ask the dentist working on you.

Root canal cleaners: It is very common to use sodium hypochlorite or bleach as a irrigant to clean out the debris from the root canal system. It is used very carefully and commonly in conjunction with other solutions to clean out the root canal system.

Yes: Chlorine or bleach has been used to clean root canals since the 1950's and probably earlier. Not only does it help kill the bacteria but it also helps to dissolve the pulp tissue inside the tooth. That is the goal of root canal therapy (remove tissue and bacteria for the canal). Other solutions are also used, but bleach is the best at removing tissue.

Sodium hypochlorite: You are probably referring to bleach (aka sodium hypochlorite). This is very common practice. The bleach disinfects the canal by killing bacteria and dissolving dead tissue. It is important for your dentist to use a rubber dam (rubber square placed over the tooth) when doing the root canal to prevent/minimize the bleach from contacting your skin.

Ideal irrigant: It may mechanically flush any loose debris, lubricate canal during biomechanical preparation and at 1% has low tissue toxicity.
