Healing: The tooth socket fills up with blood, and the blood clots. The blood clot is slowly replaced with immature bone after about 6 weeks, and the gum tissue grows over the top of the socket. The bone matures over a period of months. Of course, initially there's some swelling and pain due to inflammation, which is a normal part of the healing process.
